Professor Freyermuth is the John D. Lawson Professor of Law and a Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri, where he arrived in 1992. He received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984, and a J.D. with highest honors from the Duke University School of Law in 1987. After clerking with the late Honorable John D. Butzner, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, VA, Professor Freyermuth worked from 1988-1991 as an associate with the Raleigh, NC office of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice (now Womble Bond Dickinson). He has also taught as a visitor at the law schools at University of North Carolina, Duke, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Denver, as well as the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.

Professor Freyermuth teaches Property, Secured Transactions, Real Estate Transactions, Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Leasing, and Land Use Controls. A recipient of the 2007 William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, Prof. Freyermuth is the co-author of two casebooks published by West Group ("Real Estate Transfer, Finance and Development" and "Property and Lawyering"), the co-author of ThomsonWest's treatise "Real Estate Finance Law," and the co-author of West Academic's "The Law of Property." He is also a co-author of the student treatise "Understanding Secured Transactions" (Carolina Academic Press).

Professor Freyermuth serves as the Executive Director of the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Real Property Acts. He has served the Uniform Law Commission as Reporter for four uniform laws: Uniform Commercial Real Estate Receiverships Act, the Uniform Residential Mortgage Satisfaction Act, the Uniform Assignment of Rents Act, and the 2014 amendments to the Uniform Common Interest Ownership Act. He is an elected Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers, and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. In 2020, Prof. Freyermuth was appointed one of the team of Associate Reporters for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Fourth) of Property, the first comprehensive restatement of the law of Property.

Freyermuth has also served as a Property Fellow for the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) and has authored ten CALI lessons in Property law, which are accessible through CALI's website. He is a past Co-Chair of the Legal Education and Uniform Laws Group for the American Bar Association's Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section, for which he established and was the initial organizer of the Professors Corner series (a monthly webinar program on topics of interest to scholars and practitioners in the fields of real estate and trusts/estates).

Professor Freyermuth is married to Shari Freyermuth, who is an Associate Teaching Professor in the University of Missouri Department of Biochemistry and the Assistant Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. They have one son, Jacob (25) and one daughter, Sarah (22). Prof. Freyermuth is an active member of Saint Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbia, enjoys biking and golf, and is a devoted fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
